Agave

Agave

Description

The plant you see in the photo is called Agave. Agave grows from the south-western U.S. through the northern part of South America. This type of plant is also used to make tequila. The agave is used as a sweetener. Just like most other added sugars, agave offers no miraculous health benefits. It simply adds sweetness. Agave has about 60 calories per tablespoon, compared to 40 for the same amount of table sugar. Since agave is sweeter than table sugar, you are able to use less agave to get the same amount of sweetness.
